History of Foxash

Foxash Social & Sports Club is a volunteer organisation with all profits being put back into the club to improve facilities.

The club operates thanks to the dedicated people of the local community who have served it since its establishment in the 1930s.

History of Foxash "After the General Strike in 1926, many people were unemployed, the government of the day set-up The land Settlement Association, Whereby unemployed males could be taught a new way of life and bringing their families up into a new countryside atmosphere. So, Foxash Estate in North East Essex was purchased and transformed into a small Holding Estate with Orchards. Males helped with building there new Structures, then were taught basics in pig & poultry keeping plus horticulture. They and the community grew up, most of the families came from the North East of England. Each LSA Estate had a Community Hut, so that meetings could be held, the all in one Library, the W.I., and sometimes Sunday School all helped to build a community Spirit.

After World War 2 things changed in the LSA, The 1948 Agricultural Act put in a new conditions of entry for Tenants of small holdings. Growers became more Commercial, everyone started to employ and enlarge therefore it was soon seen that the old "Chicken Hut" Community Hut was out dated. A new Social Hall has built, now to encompass a bar and was really getting up to date. Membership was still confined to LSA Staff, Growers and their staff. In 1982 the LSA came to an end! The Foxash Packing Shed and offices were taken over by the Foxash Growers Ltd. The Social Club Members "lost" their Club House to FGL. Lady Luck went for the members, a building was located in Ipswich. it was dismantled, transported home and re-erected. This was completed by July 1990.

Now, membership has been thrown open to the locality. A number of football teams play on the site, which back in the 1930's had been set aside for the youth of Foxash."
